Khieu Ponnary Tributes Mock KR Victims

et me join my fellow Cambodians in expressing my sadness over the death of the “mother” of the Khmer Rouge, Khieu Ponnary.

Sad, not because she died, but because she could slip away from justice so easily like her ex-husband, the chief murderer Pol Pot. Maybe times and politics are robbing us of justice for the victims of the Khmer Rouge.

Who will be the next Khmer Rouge leader to die so peacefully? Presumably all of them will.

Nuon Chea said Khieu Ponnary was “a respected compatriot.” For Democratic Kampuchea, “yes.” But, not for the Cambodian people.

Don’t forget that due to her “hard work” that she had contributed to her husband, more than 1 million Cambodians had perished.

Her funeral “in line with Khmer tradition” is merely a mock to the tradition itself that she and her comrades had tried to abolish. It’s also a mock to the victims at different killing fields through-out the country who had died tragically behind hoe heads and iron bars without proper funeral.

The stupa that Ieng Sary and Ieng Thirith have constructed at Wat Svay Pope is yet another mock to Cambodian Buddhism that the Khmer Rouge had destroyed and to the Buddhist monks, including those from that very pagoda, whom they had defrocked and killed.

To show that we do care for the victims of the Khmer Rouge, like those at the Choeung Ek killing field who were dumped into mass graves, the bodies of Khieu Ponnary and Pol Pot should instead be chained and dumped in the deep jungle where their murderous revolution was born.
