W

e welcome the decision of East Timorese Prime Minster Mari Alkatiri and his admission of responsibility for the recent violence in his country (“E Timor’s Prime Minister Agrees To Step Down,” Tuesday, Page 1).

His resignation is a role model for the leaders of other new democratic countries in seeking peaceful means rather than violence to end a political crisis for the sake of the country.

The Timorese leaders and people should know that the world is watching them and wants to see that they can prove they are able to run their country as an independent nation. We are sure that the Timorese, as shown by Alkatiri’s move, can manage their country through a democratic path.

We hope that the trouble in East Timor will end completely and the Timorese people can to rebuild their shattered life and homeland to become a mature democracy.
