Pay Up, Patriots!

By Moeun Chhean Nariddh

D

ear farmers and countrymen! This is an appeal for your contributions to our efforts in raising money to compensate for the recent damage to the Thai Embassy and businesses in Phnom Penh.

We know that you were not involved with this destruction. But since this damage was caused by our fellow patriots, and we know that you are all patriots, you will also be included in whatever way to pay for this destruction.

The initial estimate of the damage claimed by the Thais was around $24 million. Indeed, this number looks like we will owe a great deal of money.

But it won’t be much if it is divided by our population of around 12 million. So, $24 million divided by 12 million people equals $2 for each patriotic citizen.

We know you farmers have the capacity to pay this $2. We also know that you earn an average of 2,500 riel ($0.63) a day – whether you are hired to transplant rice or clear weeds. To make this $2, you will have to do a little bit more than three days of work.

But, remember that you and your family will have to stop eating for three days to save $2. However, we know you will do anything in the name of Cambodian patriotism.
